Just two hours from Madrid the Jerte Valley offers crystalline gorges, forests of oaks and chestnuts, traditional architecture and of course the great river Jerte with its crystal waters. The valley is particularly suitable for those who enjoy discovering for themselves the surprises of the landscape: wander through shady trails, wet the body in the water of a gorge….
The Jerte Valley, with an exceptional microclimate throughout the year takes some very special characteristics during the spring when more than 2,000,000 cherry trees open their flowers and flood the valley of an incredible snowy image.
The river Jerte is born at 900 meters in the Tornavacas heights, and overlooks the panoramic valley of the same name. The Jerte Valley is a natural region located in the northeast of Cáceres Province, and consists of 11 villages: Barrado, Cabezuela del Valle, Cabrero, Casas del Castañar, Jerte, Navaconcejo, Piornal, Rebollar Tornavacas, El Torno and Valdastillas.
MAIN SIGHTS
Tornavacas Pass Viewpoint: overview of the Valley.
Jerte: Main Square with the Church of the Assumption and the Calleja de los Bueyes. Also chapel of the Cristo del Amparo.
Cabezuela del Valle: Historic-artistic town (arcades, stone cross, Church of St. Michael the Archangel). Viewpoint from the Chapel of Santiago (located in the upper part of the town). Cherry Museum (c/ Hondón, 58, near the N-110, Tue-Sun 10:00 to 14:30 & 17:00-19:00, closed Thu and Sun evening).
Navaconcejo: Cañada Real Street and facade of the Casa de Cultura (old factory)
Rebollar: Canchal houses (houses built on rocks, looking like terraced houses)
El Torno: called the Valley Viewpoint for its breathtaking views.
Valdastillas: old town.
Cabrero: View of Valley.
Casas del Castañar: very interesting old town.
Barrado: Oak Solana, declared Singular Tree.
